The Return of Nintento Power…as a Podcast
If you are as old as I am, you probably used to subscribe or read Nintendo Power magazine. Back before the internet, magazines like Nintendo Power were essential to get the most out of their video games. It was the first major gaming publication full of previews, reviews, tips, and walkthroughs. In 2012, Nintendo stopped publicizing it due to the fact that magazines were dying since the internet had all of the info that gamers could want or need.
Fast forward 5 years and Nintendo has announced that Nintendo Power is back. Risen from the ashes of a magazine into a modern podcast. It will be hosted by former editor of Nintendo Power, Chris Slate. He says the podcast is a “passion project” for Nintendo. Since it is still new, it is unclear how consistently new episodes will release so for now we will just have to wait and see.
This is exciting news for us old school gamers. I read the first issue at my uncle’s house, the same place I laid my hands on a NES controller. I soon becamea regular subscriber for years. I’d go back and reread them countless time. It would be cool to see the podcast turn into a monthly “issue” with all of the old segments from the magazine. For now, it is only an audio podcast and I think they are loosing out on the growing YouTube audience.
The first episode can be found here on iTunes and here on Soundcloud. In it, Slate interviews The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild producer Eiji Aonuma and director Hidemaro Fujibayashi. We also hear from Kit Ellis, the co-host of the Nintendo Minute series on YouTube, and Damon Baker, the head of partner management for Nintendo’s publisher and developer relations group.
