5 Tips for Stronger Wi-Fi
Just like in real estate, location is everything when it comes to getting a strong Wi-Fi signal. In order to get the best signal from your Wi-Fi router, you need to properly place it where it has the least obstruction from doors, walls, and windows.
Here are 5 tips to boost your home’s Wi-Fi Signal:
- Think of your router’s antennas as an umbrella. The higher it is, the more coverage you get below. If you have a two-story home, placing the router upstairs may provide a better reach to the rest of the house. Remember that floors can hinder signal, so don’t place it in an attic if there is no reason to.
- Shoot for placing the router as close to the center of your home as possible. Walls and doors can block signal, so if you have your’s on one side of the house, the other side may not get good coverage.
- If you can’t relocate your router, consider the placement of the devices that need Wi-Fi signal. Putting a device inside the TV cabinet for example, will interfere with the device’s ability to receive the Wi-Fi signal.
- Look for wireless competition in your home. If you router is an older model (802.11n), devices like baby monitors, cordless phones, Bluetooth, and the microwave can interfere with the signal. You may want to move some of these devices if possible, or consider upgrading to a newer router.
- Your router may have anywhere from two to eight antennas on them. Altering their position can make a world of difference. Don’t blindly move them around though. Start by re-positioning one at a time until you get better results. Some models have the antennas located on the inside of the device. In that case, simply turning or re-positioning the router may do the trick.
