The Nintendo Switch Becomes the Fastest Selling System of All Time

The past year was a huge one for the Nintendo Switch. The hard to find console was often sold out in many stores, and was quickly snatched up when it was restocked. Today, Nintendo announced that the Nintendo Switch is officially the fastest-selling console ever in the US, with over 10 million units shipped worldwide. Over 4.8 million of those were sold in the United States. This broke the previous record held by the prior console, the Nintendo Wii.

In a press release by Reggie Fils-Aime, President and COO of Nintendo of America, he stated:

“Fans across the country have enjoyed playing their favorite games at home or on the go,” said  “Now that many more people have received Nintendo switch systems for the holidays, we look forward to bringing them some fun new surprises in 2018 and beyond.”

The press release went more in depth with some other sales numbers. It turns out that 60% of Switch users own Super Mario Odyssey, while 55% own The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. More than 50% of users own Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and 20% have Splatoon 2. Nintendo also proudly spoke about the large number of third-party titles on the console which include: Fifa 18, Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle, Minecraft: Nintendo Switch Edition, Sonic Mania, Ultra Street Fighter II, Doom, Skyrim and many more.

Today’s announcement also pulled back the curtain as to what Switch fans can expect in 2018. Games like Kirby Star Allies, Bayonetta, Bayonetta 2 and a new Yoshi game are expected to be released this year. Publishers such as EA, Activision, Ubisoft, Capcom, SEGA, Take 2, and Bethesda, as well as a number of independent studios, will also support 2018 Nintendo’s console newest console.

The upcoming year will test the staying power of the Nintendo Switch. We will see if it was a flash in the pan, a gimmick, or if Nintendo can keep pumping up the sales numbers. It is too early to guess what Nintendo will be able to pull off in 2018. Hopefully we will get some more information sooner rather than later.
